Kartik Oraon College is a premier constituent unit of Ranchi University, Ranchi. This is situated in dense population of tribals (70%) at Gumla district headquarters. It was established in July 1960 as an affiliated body of Ranchi University, Ranchi on a 56 acre of land, lavishly donated by the then Maharaja of Ratu, Lal Chintamani Sharan Nath Sahdeo on Palkot Road, near Puggu village at a distance of 3 kms from Gumla township. Several prominent people of Gumla including leading advocates, administrators and local people spearheaded the establishment of this college. Professor Laxmi Narayan, an English Professor was the founder Principal of this college.
Passing all odds and events through a history of long 58 years, now this college is one of the biggest and most prominent colleges of Ranchi university as enrolments every year normally crosses a sizeable number of three thousands for Undergraduate courses, 950 students for Postgraduate, 200 in Bachelor of Education besides Intermediate in three faculties. The college is leaping forward for all round development through all these years with the help and cooperation of Ranchi University, the UGC, the Jharkhand govt. and most importantly the students and people of Gumla. The college has maintained a track record of academic excellence till date; just recently the college has introduced the choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in line with the UGC guidelines to this effect.
